Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have prior experience to participate?

All you need is a desire to learn and an interest in horses. You are not required to have prior riding or horse experience. We have horses for all different skill levels and your safety is our number one concern.  We will teach you the skills you need to interact safely with your horse, and will always be there to assist you and answer your questions.

What should I wear to a riding lesson?

We require all participants to wear long pants, boots with a defined heel (hiking boots, work boots, or paddock boots, etc.), and an ASTM/SEI approved helmet when riding. You may bring your own riding helmet if you have one, as long as it is ASTM/SEI certified, or we have helmets available for use during your lesson. The barn is not climate controlled so the participants need to dress appropriately for the weather. We recommend wearing layers as the participants will be active and most likely want to remove a layer or two even in the cold.

Do I need to bring my own saddle or other equipment?

No. We have many saddles of various sizes and all the other equipment you will need.

What is Vaulting?

Vaulting is a unique equestrian sport that combines dance and gymnastics on the back of a moving horse.

Is Vaulting safe?

Vaulting is actually documented as being the safest equestrian sport. It is one of the best ways to introduce people to the joy of riding horses is a safe, dynamic environment. During vaulting, a lunger is in control of the horse’s speed and direction on a circle which frees the participant to focus on their body and the movement of the horse.  Moves are practiced expensively on the barrel before moving to the horse. Our experienced instructors and horses are committed to providing you with a safe, empowering, and enjoyable experience.

What if I have no experience with horses, dance, or gymnastics?

No problem! Vaulting is appropriate for all levels of experience, including those with none at all! You will develop skills as you learn and move at your own pace.

What should I wear to a vaulting lesson?

  • Stretchy, comfortable pants that allow you to move freely (spandex, sweatpants, leggings, yoga pants, riding breeches, etc).
  • layers for the weather, no hooded sweatshirts/coats please
  • no jewelry
  • gymnastics or dance style  shoes are ideal. Many types of water shoes will also work. If you don’t have any please come wearing tennis shoes.

Why don’t I wear a helmet for vaulting?

Most of the time, vaulting is done without a helmet, as it is believed to be safer. This is because vaulting requires diverse movements, during which helmets tend to get in the way, obstruct vision, and throw the vaulter off balance. Helmets can still be worn during a session at the participants or parents request.
